CHIRICO TENPEAT on TIGER MOUNTAIN
Just
the week before Issy Alps I had the pleasure and pain of joining the
Seattle Mountain Running Group (SMRG) for a really, reaaaalllly long
hill repeat "Race Director Challenge." Actually, it was open to all
runners, not just race directors, who were willing to do 10 repeats of the Chirico Trail: 3.5
miles (out and back) with 1,700 feet of climbing. It just so happened
that the top 4 of us battling it out for the coveted Tiger Hat were all
race directors. The Tiger Hat is a new tradition that the winner gets
to wear. The winner being the first person to complete all ten repeats
(it's on Tiger Mountain, hence the Tiger hat) for a total of 17,000 feet
of climbing in 34 miles. Roger Michel won in a blazing 9:21, followed
by Kevin Douglas in 9:40, then me in 9:47 and then James in 9:53. There
were a total of 6 finishers of the 10 repeats with 20+ people coming
out to do at least one repeat and keep us company!
From James, last year's winner, and only finisher (on the Tiger Hat):
as
tradition dictates: the first runner to start their 10th repeat must do
so wearing the chirico tiger hat. if that runner is caught and passed
by another runner on their last repeat they must hand over the tiger.
the winner must then take care of the tiger for the entire year until
the next chirico tenpeat at which time they will wear the hat for the
first repeat and then leave the hat at the aid station for the remainder
of the day.
